Welcome Back Jack?
Not sure what to believe right now.

Monta is one my favorite players, and I miss him a lot already. But the Warriors weren't going to get better with his big contract unless he grows 4" taller (like Klay and Kobe).
Thank you Milwaukee. First Maggette's contract, and now this. How will we ever repay you?

Cindy and I accidentally broke this hammock when we stayed at the Nelson's home in Maui.

Pampas in Palo Alto is fantastic. Served in a modern Brazilian churrasco setting, the food is delicious and satisfying. But don't ruin your experience by over-stuffing yourself -- know when to say when! You can always go back again.
It doesn't seem like the kind of place that welcomes kids, but our family was treated very well -- and our kids ate a lot too! (for their standards)
Can't wait to go back again.

Just finished reading this book (again). If you haven't read it, you must. Ok, you should probably read the rest of The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy first. But a few thousand pages later, and you will be amazed by how worthy it is.
My pitch: It's really funny. I've only ever laughed out loud throughout three books.
First book: Ok, I probably laughed out loud through all five of the books in The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy trilogy. But if Adams can count five books as a trilogy, then I can count his trilogy as one book in my list of three books I've laughed out loud reading.
Second book: Bombardiers (Po Bronson)
Third book: Catch-22 (Joseph Heller)
Go read them all. But seriously, make your way to Mostly Harmless. Before it's too late.

NBA season is around the corner, which means it's time to get ready for fantasy hoops!
First order of business is to pick a new team name. Last year's Nattie-Pie didn't do the trick, as it was the first time in 6 seasons I didn't place in the top 3 (out of 12 teams). Thus, a serious consideration for returning as Romp-Bomp-A-Chomp which took back-to-back 1st place finishes in seasons 4 and 5.
Anyhoo, to refuel my constant bragging, look out for this year's Reekerleague fantasy hoops champion: Yo Gabba Gabba!

This has been quite a series, but games 3 and 4 at Oakland Arena were insane. Too bad Warriors let game 5 slip away, but not a bad effort considering they were down 21 on unfriendly territory in the first half. We'll give the Mavs another incredible reception on Thursday. I still believe.

It's been a trip around the sun since I started this blog. What was christened "work - family - me" has appeared to have mostly been about family and photos.

I ended up with 60 posts this first year. (~5 per month) Not quite the twice per week I originally thought I could muster, but not bad either.
Now that I have somewhat of a groove, I look forward to updating more frequently this second year. I'm also officially changing the sub-title from "work - family - me" to "photos - some other stuff - mostly photos"
Thanks for sharing this past year with me!

I just finished reading Zorro, and it was excellent. I bought this book last June from Cody's in Berkeley, just before they closed for good. As I mentioned in that earlier post, Isabel Allende is one of my favorite authors, and she delighted me again with this novel.
Although not as enthralling as The House of the Spirits, Zorro is still immersive in the same story telling style. Isabelita (as I call her, Ms. Allende to you), Isabelita tells deep rich stories, where she fully connects you with the protagonists by sharing everything about the people that shaped them. Zorro doesn't have the mysticism like her other fairy tale dramas, but instead recounts matter-of-factly (and sometimes comically) how Zorro came to be so amazing. While Spider-Man can be summed up in a half dozen panels (gets super powers when bitten by radio-active spider and is driven by uber-responsibility-remorse after missing an easy opportunity to save his beloved Uncle's life because of his prior apathy) -- Zorro requires 390 pages to fully understand the mystery of his character.
And although the book ends when he's only 20 years old and before any of his heroic Zorro adventures begin, I felt satisfied that the book was complete. There's an epilogue that puts a period on his entire life, but to relive the verteran Zorro who protected "The People" after his rookie outing, we are left to seek out the TV shows, Antonio Banderas and my favorite, the cartoon series that had to share billing with Tarzan and The Lone Ranger.
I'm sure this would make my top ten books ever list. If you read it and disagree, then you'll have learned a bit about me in addition to Zorro. ;-)

Cindy and Lora hosted a Meet the Chef event with Chef Dane. We've been enjoying Chef Dane's meals for a couple years now, but this time I finally got to see how it's done. This is the original location where it all began, and it looks recently remodeled. They're now opening several dozen franchises across the country, including one in my home town Danvers, Massachusetts!
This is a fun and reasonably priced way to have great gourmet food at home. They pretty much do all the work, and you just have to put the final fresh ingredients together. All the packaging, labels and directions are clearly prepared.
There are now lots of imitating competitors, but I highly recommend you check out Chef Dane's Home.

Bon appetit!

My father-in-law took me to the Raider game today. It was the first time for both of us. The weather was gorgeous, and the intensity was everything we'd ever heard. I've been to other NFL games, and this was nothing like any of them. Even the bass and tunes booming from mega sound system did not seem likely to be played in any other stadium. Snoop was probably the most mainstream.
I thought I loved the Raiders since I was a kid in LA, but true Raiders fans are crazy. There were lots of Steeler fans too, so some jabbing was to be expected. But most of the wrestling, beating and antics in the Colliseum corridors were between friends or just random people trying to psyche each other up even more. Crazy.
Suffice it to say we survived the Black Hole and had a super-fun time with Raider Nation. Best of all, the Raiders won a nail-biter. Even though Oakland had what would normally be a pretty good lead most of the game, everyone could feel Pittsburg was more in control. Raiders ended with less than 100 yards offense, but their defense had 5 sacks and 4 interceptions with two returned for touchdowns (one for a full 100 yards). In the last 4 minutes of the game, the silver and black D stopped Big Ben, Parker and Ward at least 7 times at the goal line to keep the Steelers from tying. My voice is hoarse. You had to be there. Raiders 20, Steelers 13.
Quite a contrast from yesterday when Cindy and I took the kids to see Mickey on ice. That was fun too.

Did you know Blues Clues was a girl?! Apparently a lot of folks do know this, but I had no clue of any color until tonight when I saw a commercial about him, I mean, her becoming a big sister. I wasn't surprised a bit to hear about Lance's coming out, but I'm so shocked and shaken by the Blues Clues revelation that I've been asking everyone since if this was news to them. (Again, apparently not.) But I'm not the only one right? Please chime in if this is a surprise that will keep you up at night.

I went to pick up dinner from Sushi O Sushi tonight. It's a very good restaurant, and there was quite a line for both seating and take out. And as I was waiting for my food, one of the waitresses came up to me and said, "I remember you! From the airplane!"
Apparently, she had recognized me and was trying for the past 15 minutes to figure out from where. (It was quite a wait for our food.) But all she could say was "yes, yes, that's how I know you," and I really thought she had mistaken me for someone else.
But eventually she was able to articulate further, "on Christmas" (yes?) "on Southwest" (ok?) "from Ontario" (whoa!). She really did have a good memory, which she was proud to admit, "I have a really good memory!"
Turns out she was sitting in the row behind us, so we had never even met. Cindy and I each had a baby in our lap, so with our neighbor in the third seat that made five people in our row. There are only four oxygen masks that drop from above, so I had to take one of the kids and move to another row. The lady/waitress behind us remembered us all from the commotion of changing seats. She didn't know why I had to move, but thought the airline was being mean for separating our family.
Small world. Good memory. And then she was nice enough to hurry our order along because I had been waiting a while. Maybe she remembered I had kids waiting at home.

I can't believe we're at the elite 8, and I don't recall hearing a peep or mention of the tourney at all so far! (Go UCLA!) I know I don't watch a lot of TV, but how could I have not seen anything remotely resembling madness yet? In hindsight, maybe there were a few tv commercials riding the tourney season, and Warren did ping me when Duke trailed LSU... but I still didn't quite draw the connection that March and Madness were in full swing. If I thought about the date, I suppose I should have realized they wouldn't finish the tournament if they started next week.
Now, it's not that I'm such a big college hoops fan that I would've watched all the games. I've actually been sick the last couple weeks, which now occurs to me might seem suspicious to my boss who could be thinking I've been staying home with a case of March Madness. But the real reason why the tournament has zipped by without me noticing is because I haven't heard a single crack about my name this year. At all!
For those of you who don't know, my last name is Fan. Give it a minute, and then you'll see why all dukkies seem to like me even though I continue to curse the Blue Devils. However, I often draw more comments from duke-haters than from duke-alumni. I've spared our son Jaden, as I've joked the past decade that I'd name my boy Calvin so he could be Cal Fan.
Anyways, I know there are still some big games to come, but this is more peace than I've ever had for a March. I'm already hoping for a repeat next year.
/yes i am, duke fan
